And layer in what it means to have ambition, wait— can we rename it drive? I’m talking about the thing beavers and ants and tigers have to continually propel themselves onward—as a human woman.

Did you read All Fours? There’s a great book club question where Miranda July asks: Where do you like to perform?

It’s not “do you like to perform?” Which we could all demure and say, “oh no I don’t ‘perform’” but the assertion in her question is…we all do. I laughed when I read it and thought, “what if I actually allowed myself to be seen?”

I've been thinking about this since I saw it yesterday (not constantly, obviously, but I've been coming back to it) and I love the layer--the drive layer.

I have not read All Fours, but I need to! And the phrasing of that is so interesting.

And so is this: What if I actually allowed myself to be seen?

It's scary, right? But it's real. It's also a step of empowerment, even the phrasing of it "allowed."

You’re right. It is the real stuff, the core of the soul type stuff that challenges our own wild assumptions about who we are.

For the record, I like being seen mowing my lawn. I need all the honks and beeps I can get pushing that godforsaken mower up the hill.
