One of the big things people get annoyed at me about when I write is that I’m pretty self-deprecating. That’s partially because of how I was raised, but a lot of women get a bit miffed at me about it.
And this always annoys me because I don’t think it’s terribly empowering to be told that your personality is wrong. I get that they are coming from a place of kindness and that they want me to be shiny like them, but I’m okay having my rust show.
However, being harder on yourself than anyone else in your story is a pretty time-honored tradition of a lot of American humorists (not that I’m a humorist).
